A Mood Board Is Page 4. A Design Deck Is the Other 31 Pages.
Every planner sends a mood board. Few send a design deck. The ones who do charge more. Here is the difference, when to use each, and why design decks close higher-budget bookings.
What a Mood Board Is
A mood board is a curated collection of images and textures that communicates a vibe. Typically 1-3 pages. A collage of inspiration images, maybe a color palette, maybe a sentence about the aesthetic direction.
It is great for one thing: initial direction. "Does this feel right to you?" is the mood board question. It sets the emotional baseline. It opens the conversation.
What it does not do: close the booking.
What a Design Deck Is
A design deck is a 20-40 page document that walks the couple through every design element of their wedding day. Ceremony through send-off. The mood board is one page in the deck -- page 4, specifically.
The design deck answers every question the couple has not asked yet. What does the ceremony arch look like? What about the cocktail hour lounge? The place setting? The lighting after dark? The floral installations? The stationery suite?
When a couple finishes reading a design deck, they feel like they just attended their own wedding. That feeling is what closes the booking.
Why Planners Confuse Them
Pinterest culture made "mood board" the default vocabulary. Many planners create enhanced mood boards -- 5-8 pages with some layout details and a few extra images -- and call them design decks. They are not.
The gap between a 5-page enhanced mood board and a true 32-page design deck is where bookings are lost. The couple says "this is nice" instead of "this is exactly what we want." "Nice" does not close bookings. "Exactly" does.
When to Use Each
| Situation | Mood Board | Design Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Initial consultation | Yes | Too early |
| Before the contract | Yes | Optional |
| After booking, before vendors | Not enough | Yes |
| Vendor coordination meeting | No | Yes |
| Client sharing with family | Incomplete | Yes |
The mood board gets the "yes." The design deck turns the "yes" into an executed wedding.
The Revenue Difference
Planners who present full design decks can charge $500-$2,000 more per client. The deck demonstrates expertise. It is the visual proof that you know how to execute.
A mood board says "I have good taste." A design deck says "I have good taste AND I know how to turn it into a wedding." The second planner charges more because the second planner delivers more.
At 25 weddings per year, an additional $1,000 per booking is $25,000 in annual revenue. From a document.
